Royal Ballet Honors Cuban Alonso

Prensa Latina:

London’s Royal Ballet will devote on Wednesday its second performance in this capital to Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso, and first Cuban National Ballet (BNC) figures will join this homage.

The Garcia Lorca theater hall will host the prestigious British ballet company dancers in a top-artistic-level show.

The program of the tribute to Alicia Alonso includes de pas de deux of the second act of Giselle, a choreographic version by Marius Petipa of Coralli-Perrot’s original, performed by Australian dancers Leanne Benjamin and Johan Kobborg.

On July 15, 1946 at London’s Covent Garden, the Cuban prima ballerina assoluta performed that dance, the quintessence of romanticism on which she stamped her own style to turn it into an emblematic piece of ballet dance.

They also will dance the pas de deux of Theme and variations, especially created for her by choreographer George Balanchine, a highly complex ballet dance in technique that she premiered on November 26, 1947 at the Metropolitan House in New York, with Igor Youshevitch as partenaire.

First BNC figures Anette Delgado and Yolanda Correa will dance with Italian Federico Bonnelli in Theme and variations, while Viengsay Valdes will dance with Brazilian Thiago Soares the pas de deux of Swan Lake, Act III, by Petipa, with music by Tchaikovsky.

On the second consecutive night, Spanish Tamara Rojo will go on stage with the pas de deux of Don Quixote, Act III, accompanied by Cuban Joel Carreno.

The repertoire includes Johan Kobborg’s Les Lutins premiere, one of the recent pieces of the British company, with Hungarian dancer Alina Cojocaru, Australian Steven McRae and Ukranian Sergei Polunin in the main roles.

The Cuban audience was able to enjoy on Tuesday night the first Royal Ballet performance in Havana, considered a significant cultural event on the island. – Flights to Cuba
