New Orleans seeks charter flights to Cuba

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans is hoping to land direct charter flights to Cuba.

Mayor Ray Nagin said late Wednesday that the issue was raised during meetings with U.S. Transportation and State Department officials during his lobbying trip to Washington, D.C. He said he received no commitments from federal officials or a timeline for when any response might come.

Since 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, local officials have talked about re-making New Orleans’ tourism-based economy and recasting the city more as a true international destination.

Nagin said he also met with the head of FEMA and raised concerns about the federal agency’s valuation of infrastructure rebuilding projects. The city has long complained that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has undervalued projects. FEMA officials have repeated that it is the agency’s mandate to help restore what existed before the disaster — not to pay for such things as deferred maintenance.

Nagin insisted the city isn’t asking for more than its fair share but that protracted funding disputes could cause a cash-flow problem for the city later this year as it tries to keep its rebuilding program on track.
